The origin of tapas is uncertain, although it is generally agreed that they come from Andalusia. What is unquestionably true is that they play an essential role in Spain’s gastronomic scene. Tapa is the Spanish word for “lid” and it is thought to describe the old custom of serving a slice of ham covering the mouth of a wineglass; in doing so, the wine was protected from the air… and the ham (or other tidbits) made a tasty appetizer!
Much like Spanish traditional cooking, tapas tend to vary between regions, reflecting not only differences in ingredients and preparations, but also different lifestyles. They can be traditional or creative, served on bread or independently, cold or hot, small or large. Even the names used to describe these miniature dishes may be different, and what is known as tapa in one area can be called ración or pintxo in others.
Whatever the name may be, there is no better way to easily explore and discover the wide array of flavors in Spanish cuisine than to participate in a Tapas Tour. In the company of a local foodie, you’ll be visiting two or three of the most interesting tapas bars in the town of your choice. Our expert will help you select different tapas, based on your personal tastes, of course, but also the regional or house specialties. No hurries, no fixed timing; you decide whether it is fine to stay standing or you’d rather take a seat, we’ll do our best to cater to your preferences, and your tapas are always accompanied by wine or another drink of your liking.
You have to bear in mind that tapas, and our Tapas Tours, are not just a casual way of learning about Spanish food; they are also - and above all! - about having a good time, about coming together with other people and, at the same time, treating yourself to the pleasures of good food and wine... a way of life, common to all Spaniards, regardless of their region.
